Empire Builder in PortlandAmtrak P42-9DC #64 is the power on the Portland section of the "Empire Builder" as it loads at Portland Union Station for its run to Chicago. The view is from the Station Place parking garage
The Portland section will run up the Columbia River Gorge to Spokane, where it will combine with the train's Seattle section before continuing its trip.
In the background is Union Pacific business car "Shoshone" on the railroad's 150th Anniversary special, on display at the depot.
The Broadway Bridge, just behind the Amtrak consist, became part of the Rose City's latest transit corridor Sep. 22 with the official startup of Portland Streetcar's east side extension, known as the Central Loop Line.
The streetcar route crosses the Broadway Bridge from a connection with the existing streetcar network and serves the Rose Quarter sports complex, the Lloyd Center commercial area, the Oregon Convention Center, the Central Eastside industrial area and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
The streetcar also serves the new Oregon Rail Heritage Center, which is adjacent to OMSI and opened the same day.
