Second 8444...

This Union Pacific SD70ACe is the second UP locomotive to wear #8444, and on this day it is the backup power for the first -- FEF-3 Northern #844, which picked up the extra digit in the early 1960s when UP acquired GP30 #844.

The 4-8-4 reclaimed its original number when UP eventually retired the GP30, and continues to wear it as part of the railroad's heritage fleet of locomotives and rolling stock.

The 8444 is shown at Albina Yard in Portland, Ore. on the "Portland Rose" special.
