BOSTON & MAINE 3713

B&M P-4-a 3713 "The Constitution" powered the April 22, 1956 Steam "Safari" from Boston to Portland. Although the trip was not billed as the last of anything, effectively it marked the end of mainline, long distance steam on the B&M. Steam continued to pull commuter trains out of Boston for a short while more but this was about the end. I shot her backing the long train to the water crane with the engineer sanding heavily to keep her moving after, as I vaguely recall, overshooting the spot slightly. 3713 was built by Lima in 1934 and is at Scranton where hopefully she may steam again.
