BOSTON & MAINE 3713

With the fireman putting on a show for her fans, B&M P-4-a Pacific 3713 "The Constitution" leads the April 22, 1956 Steam "Safari" over the bridge at Dover during the only scheduled photo stop on what was effectively the last non-commuter run of a Boston & Maine steam locomotive. The Boston to Portland round trip fare was $4.75. During the layover at Portland the Grand Trunk displayed a still active 4-8-2, 2-8-2 and 0-6-0 at its station across town from the B&M/MEC Union Station. The run back to Boston was scheduled for 2 hours and 25 minutes with three stops, about the same timing as the present Amtrak schedule. I can't remember if we arrived on time but I think we did since I had enough light to take a few pictures of 3713 being coaled for the last time at the East Sommerville coaling tower.
