Your “archeological” documentation is commendable. This photo reminds me of the culverts on the Calais Branch of the Maine Central RR, built at the turn of the last century as the Washington County Railroad. They made culverts by stacking granite blocks like Legos. After many years abandoned the line is now a multi-use trail but the culverts are still holding up despite repeated plugging by beavers which washes out the sandy fill above them.
