Unfinished Railroad at Manassas, Virginia

A railroad cut-off was constructed between Alexandria, Virginia and the Manassas Gap during the late 1850's, but the company went bankrupt and the line was graded, but never finished. Stonewall Jackson used the cuts and fill as a ready-made trench system on August 28-39. 1862 to repel Federal assaults during the Battle of 2nd Bull Run. The line runs east to west along the entire 3 mile front of the battlefield and is well preserved by the National Park Service.
