The BIG Cab Car...Amtrak NPCU #90340, formerly F40PH #340, now represents the "supersized" cab car in Eugene, Ore.-Vancouver, B.C. "Cascades" service.
The recent arrival of the first of two new TALGO VIII sets owned by the state of Oregon also heralds the appearance of the train's smaller integral cab-auxiliary power cars.
The 90340 is unique among the five NPCUs that wear the "Cascades" color scheme in that it retained its underbody fuel tanks and has no skirting.
The other four, #90250-#90253, all had their underbody hardware removed and the open space concealed by a distinctive side skirt.
A sixth NPCU in "Cascades" service, #90278, was built in Amtrak's "cabbage" configuration with the roll-up side baggage doors, and wears the Amtrak Phase V color scheme.
The 90340 is shown at Vancouver, Wash. on #506, which makes an early afternoon departure from Portland on its way to Seattle.
