Into the FoothillsThe Piedmont (French for "foothill") region of North Carolina lends its name to the Raleigh-Charlotte passenger trains sponsored by the state DOT.
The trains operate with a mix of heritage rolling stock from several railroads, and a small locomotive fleet of built-new F59PHIs and former GO Transit F59PHs.
"Piedmont" #75, with Amtrak P42-9DC #95 substituting for the usual NCDOT locomotive, is just pulling off the CSX, former SAL main at CP Boylan on its way from the coach yard near the former SAL Raleigh depot.
The train will pull through the interlocking before backing into the Raleigh depot for its scheduled departure.
Baggage-lounge "Albemarle Sound" and coaches "Box Turtle", "Emerald" and "Long Leaf Pine" make up today's #75. "Albemarle Sound" is a former Amtrak lounge converted from a U.S. Army hospital car; the "Box Turtle" and "Emerald" are former Union Pacific; the "Long Leaf Pine" is a former Kansas City Southern car.
