Rail Trail and Battlefield

This line was first constructed around 1850 and connected Richmond and Petersburg, VA southwest to Danville and North Carolina. A cavalry raid attempted to burn the rails and bridges along the ROW, but were defeated at this location along the Staunton River, about 130 miles southwest of Richmond. It was a branch of the Southern until about 30 years ago and is now run by the State of Virginia.
