Approach to the Staunton River Bridge

On June 24, 1864 a brigade of US cavalry attempted to driven south along this railroad to burn a bridge over the Staunton River, only to be forced back by Confederate defenders. This roadbed was a branch of the Southern until the 1970's and now has been converted into a rail trail and state battlefield park. The Yanks did manage to burn most of the rails, which were made of wood.
