CENTRAL VERMONT STEAM IN NEW LONDON

CV N-5a 2-8-0 467 (Schenectady 1923) is ready to haul a fantrip to Amherst, Mass. The Central Vermont engine facility was compact but interesting. The hopper car is standing under the type of ash conveyor which was also at Brattleboro, White River Jct, St.Albans, etc. Note how piles are used at the edge of the turntable pit where engines will move but timbers are sufficient where weight is not a consideration. A concrete pit wall would be more common at a major facility. The concrete pier supported the I-95 bridge over the Thames River. The diesel is the ALCO switcher assigned to New London.
