The Last SP E

From its original "City" train E2s in the 1930s to the end of SP passenger service in 1971, SP operated a significant fleet of the sleek EMD passenger diesels. Here's the last surviving one, E9 #6051, on display next to the old Central Pacific depot at Sacramento, Calif.

The unit, now part of the collection of the California State Railroad Museum, is teamed with a diner and a lounge from the 1950 Budd-built "Sunset Limited" fleet. Both cars, which SP had retained for business train use in 1971, now wear the orange and red "Daylight" colors long associated with SP passenger trains.
