Grip change.

Looking up at the front truck of a San Francisco Cable Car from an inspection pit at the Cable Car Barn at Washington/Mason Sts. of the San Francisco Municipal Railway. The car is getting its grip replaced. You can smell the burnt pine jumping out of the picture as pine tar is used as a grip/"rope" lubricant. The cars are also equipped with auxiliary wooden pine block track brakes which rub against the running rails, activated by the Gripman with a large hand lever next to his grip.

Photographed by Paul Joyce, August, 1969.
Added to the photo archive by Paul Joyce, May 25, 2006.
