"Braintree Car"Here is your photographer inside a #4 - 1927 Cambridge Tunnel Car in 1972, which has had a seating upgrade, installed in 1948 by the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Called "Braintree Cars", four cars were upgraded with comfortable, transverse, vinyl upholstered, cushioned, double seats replacing the hard wooden longitudinal seating normally found on these cars. New lighting and fans were added as well. This change was not adopted for the rest of the fleet, however, probably due to the fact that they were merely a (yet to be built) Braintree extension "promo", and that the new seating resulted in reducing peak passenger load at rush-hour. Compared to the standard longitudinal seating (pictured in the next photograph), aisle space was clearly compromised - the #4's with longitudinal seating would pack up to an amazing 412 passengers per car during rush hour periods !
