Old B&O Jct at Relay, Md. - CSX Today. The next few photos in this series are constitute a quick look at the 1st RR jct in the US. The B&O's Old Maine Line and Line Washington DC.
The track in the foreground lays on the original ROW between Baltimore & Ellicot Mills, Md. Horse drawn RR cars running on iron strapped wooden rail liad on granite ties was put down here about 1828. This line on CSX today is still called the Old Maine Line Sub. It was single tracked some years ago so container trains could pass thru the tunnels.
The other two lines are on the CSX Capital Sub. These two lines connect Washington & Baltimore and see both commuter rail (MARC) and freight. There's a fair amount of traffic. On this Sat morning our fearless band of rail fans were treated to 10 trains in a little over 3 hours.
The camera is situated in front of the old RR hotel, now a private residence, in the town of Relay. Relay got it's name since the horses which pulled the early rail cars were changed here. A defect detector is right in front of the camera just a few feet east of Mile Post 7. (Mile post 9 on the original B&O)
Note the white marble monument in the distance. /DL Photographed by David Larrabee, March 11, 2006. Added to the photo archive by David Larrabee, March 11, 2006. Railroad: CSX.
