B&O's Thomas Viaduct at Relay, Md. - CSX

There are several places in early east coast railroading where one might pause for a moment and ponder the magnitude of the job ahead. This is one of them. The marble obelisk marks the opening of the Thomas Viaduct a stone arch bridge over the Patapsco River. It opened in 1832 and along with other notable but forgotten infrastructure milestones, provide RR service between Baltimore & Washington.

The Viaduct remains in service to this day. The lead unit of K374 has just come off the Viaduct pulling a string of Coke hoppers. /DL
