Before the Northfield Tunnel was opened in 1891, the O&W had a switchback line. It had 1 switchback at Northfield and two switchbacks at Merrickville.

This is the switchback line near the north portal. This red shed is sitting on the switchback line. Trains would be headed to Merrickville. The north portal of the tunnel is in a deep cut to the right.
