Visitor Comments about this Photo:Nice shot. I hadn't even known such a mechanism existed at this spot. Posted by Allan Lovering on 2023-03-01 19:07:24 I think this derail, signal, and diamond traffic control were part of the CSX PTC installation on the B&A. If I recall correctly before PTC the NECR crewman simply pushed a button in a box near the diamond requesting permission to cross without the CSX dispatcher involved. If no CSX train were in the neighborhood, NECR would get to cross and dwell on the diamond and CSX trains would see red aspects. So the only potential for collision would be if there was a runaway car/locomotive or NECR or CSX crew ignored a stop signal - I don't believe there was a derail on the ex-CV tracks. With PTC, an errant NECR move would hit the derail but the distance to the diamond looks short - I wonder if it's possible that the derailed car/locomotive could foul the CSX main unbeknownst to a passing train?
