Closer View of AMTK 461 and AMTK 462 at Amsterdam, NY

AMTK 461 and AMTK 462 (F59PHI's) ride east dead-in-tow on a Conrail mixed freight at Amsterdam, NY. Units are essentially brand new, built in August, 1998 and photographed in September. I cannot explain why 2 units, built by EMD outside Chicago and intended for Surfliner service in Southern California would be headed toward Selkirk or any other point in the northeast, but here they are, proof of either a very odd routing or some temporary assignment which seems not to have been captured photographically (or at least has not made any easy-to-find appearance on the internet). Both units are now working for Metra in Chicago, having left Amtrak after about 20 years of Surfliner service, where they have been replaced by Siemens Sprinters.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

From what I've read on-line, during the '90s EMD did not have enough capacity at its GMD London plant (locomotive assembly at La Grange IL had been terminated) to meet demand so it farmed out assembly to Alstom at Montreal, Bombardier in Mexico, and Super Steel at Schenectady. If I understand correctly, these F59PHI units were assembled at Super Steel Schenectady which if I recall correctly was located along Guilford's Rotterdam Jct line. So perhaps this Conrail freight had just picked up the 2 Surfliners from GRS interchange at RJ and were now headed to Selkirk (or maybe W Albany Yard?). I have seen photos of these two newly built units sitting at Amtrak's Rensselaer shops awaiting Amtrak movement to the west coast presumably via the Lake Shore Ltd. Good catch!
