At the startup of Conrail the D&H was able to purchase units from other roads taken into Conrail. D&H got 20 almost new GP39-2's from Reading. These were numbered in the 3400 series and to quickly get them on the road the D&H shop crews patched out the first number and road names and added a 7 and a D&H shield on the cab sides and put them to work.

Photographed by Henry Probst-Mike LaCasse collection, April, 1976.
Added to the photo archive by Mike LaCasse, October 7, 2021.
