Eastbound SP Freight on the old Rio Grande at Mitchell, CO

SSW 8375 (SD40T-2), SP 8491 (SD40T-2) and a 3rd Espee tunnel motor lead their easbound freight around a sweeping curve as they continue the climb toward Tennessee Pass tunnel, which is not too far ahead here. The final approach easbound is through this broad valley called Piney Gulch. The Rio Grande made full use of the gulch, curving back and forth to reduce the steepness of the climb up to Tennesse Pass.
