Eastbound BN Stack Train with LNG Experimental Units in Montana

In 1991 BN modified 2 SD40-2's, BN 7890 and BN 7149, to use Liquified Natural Gas as fuel. The LNG was carried in a large tank car between the 2 units; it was kept cool by allowing a little of the fuel to evaporate and vent into the atmosphere. Here the 2 units, accompanied by BN 6371 and BN 7213 (conventional SD40-2's) lead an eastbound stack train over the impressive trestle across the Middle Fork of the Flathead River between Columbia Falls and Belton, MT. Both LNG units were converted back to diesel fuel in 1996.
