CP Rail Stack Train Crossing Old Portage Trestle

5 units: 1 CP Rail SD40-2, an NYSW B40-8, a GATX lease unit, and 2 more CP Rail SD40-2's lead what appears to be a CP Rail stack train over the old ERIE Portage trestle as viewed from Letchworth State Park a bit downstream from the Upper Falls of the Genesee River. The 3 CP Rail units look to be in UP colors, but CP Rail does not seem to have acquired its ex-UP/MP SD40-2's until 11 months after the date of this photo. They must have picked up some other used SD40-2's in light paint somewhere, but I am not aware whose they would have been before.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

CP bought some used KCS SD40-2s. They were in the white paint and lasted that way on CP for a while. I'm not sure what year that happened though.

Thanks for that information, Geoff. I found that CP purchased 7 KCS SD40-2's in December, 1992, ran them with their KCS 3-digit numbers, but CP markings, until 1997, when the 7 became CP 5415-5421. www.cprdieselroster.com has photos of a few of them still in KCS white after receiving CP Rail 4-digit numbers. Enlarging my initial scanned image shows that at least the 4th and 5th units here could plausibly be carrying 3-digit numbers. I suspect you have cleared up they mystery.
