With 54 miles to go, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner 579 is departing Laguna Niguel, California, on the 128 mile run from San Diego to Los Angeles. Following a serious mishap the following year, locomotives would be operated exclusively on the "out bound" end of push pull consists.
