D&H Apollo eb at Portageville NY on the ex-EL Buffalo line

It's less than 2 months after D&H's growth in route miles following the creation of Conrail on 4/1/76. In this May '76 photo, a trio of GP39-2 engines led by ex-Reading 402 (now D&H 7402) leads the now D&H Apollo pig train. The lightning striped Geeps are the expanded D&H's newest locomotives being 2 months old - they've been pressed into service before the D&H hearld was applied under the cab window.

Photographed by John Barlow, May, 1976.
