Sometimes I just have to go WEST...

This was a frigid day with wind and snow to chase Train No. 8 east, from the cozy confines of the Izaak Walton Inn, in Essex, MT! The Empire Builder is seen here at the continental divide, summit of Marias Pass. Today the Builder remains among the finest of the long distance trips on Amtrak, still with a REAL dining car, and this part of the country is amazing all year...a great winter getaway, if you enjoy snow!

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

This is a great train. I've ridden it E and W from Whitefish to Shelby MT and back in summer. The dome car I was in had National Park docents describing the route's points of interest both ways. Very cool.

And a much better experience than the bare-bones Auto Train I rode to FL a few months ago along the very rough CSX main. Never again.
