Pennsylvania Railroad Coal Pier at Sodus Point, NY

A Great Lakes Bulk Carrier named Baygeorge looks to be consuming part of its cargo as it prepares to depart from the Pennsylvania Railroads coal pier in Sodus Point, NY and the north end of PRR\'s Elmira Branch that extended north from Williamport, PA thru Elmira to Sodus Point on Lake Ontario. Though the home port is not legible in this image, scanned from an old negative, I recall seeing another not too long ago that showed the ship was based in Ontario. Date is a guess, definitely between spring of 1966 and spring of 1968.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

I've heard of Boy George but not Baygeorge! It's interesting to see B&O hopper cars in use here as B&O had its own coal dock at Charlotte NY on the Genesee River at Lake Ontario that apparently was in use until 1970. I've read that Baygeorge was often used by Bayswater Shipping (Brockville, ON?) to transport coal from the B&O at Rochester to a cement plant at Pt Anne near Bellevue ON. Baygeorge has a very interesting history after be built as an oil tanker in Dundee, Scotland for the Great Lakes shipping in 1912, converted to a coal hauler in 1951, lengthened in 1965, but removed from service in 1967 and scrapped in 1971. http://www.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/Documents/Scanner/14/08/default.asp?ID=s004
