Before the Bicycles

I just so happened to catch what I believe was the last train on the Hollis Branch, itself a remnant of the old Worcester, Nashua and Portland through route. The B&M used the branch to store a very long line of unused box cars. On this day B&M GP-9 #1722 and another GP-9 out of the frame was about to cross Main Street in Ayer, MA. I recall twigs and branches stuck on the engines and cars from all the overgrowth. Twenty years later a paved bike trail was completed by DCR.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

I was onboard the ZigZag Excursion in 1971 (Budd Cars out of North Station) that went from Boston to Ayer, then went up both the Hollis and Greenville branches. It was an interesting trip.
