Hauling Through Elizabeth

Reading 2-8-2 #1709 is charging through the CNJ depot and on the inner iron of the four track main line of the Jersey Central having just emerged from passing under the four track main of the Pennsylvania. I am assuming the Reading had joint trackage rights here. This Depression Era photograph is one of the favorites in my collection. The slight blur and rolling smoke add to the impression of some speed. The CNJ had two station structures here. The one in the background was taken out in a spectacular wreck in 1972 started by a high car that failed to smoothly negotiate the underside of the PRR overpass and dragged several cars behind it off the rails and into the station. The CNJ main line is gone today but the main station, out of view on the right, has been preserved.
