Thirty Year Veteran

At the time this photo was taken this New Haven ALCO HH-660 #0924 was a 30-year veteran having already served alongside steam for almost its first 15 years. The elevation in this photograph was provided by the Summer Street overpass in South Boston. Note the complicated switch work in the left field of the picture. It was controlled from a switchmnan's ground-level shanty with levers activating rods to the switch points. I think it essentially controlled the throat of the large yard that was between Commonwealth Pier and Summer St. This was the last HH switcher that the NH owned and it survived until 1971 as PC #9411.
