Back when Amtrak was interesting and "Fun"

Apologies for the lowish quality scans of these color negatives from the very late 20th century but on this particular winter's day in the late '90s, my son and I happened upon Amtrak 449, the Lake Shore Ltd departing from Framingham with its 2nd unit being a former "Florida Fun-Train" F40. The need for the 2nd unit is due the 6 Material Handling Cars tacked on behind the normal 5 car passenger consist. IIRC, 449 picked up additional MHCs or perhaps RoadRailers at Springfield. I think Amtrak had timekeeping issues operating freight train length consists across its network and the host RRs weren't happy to have additional intermodal competition either. So Amtrak's operation of mixed trains was fairly short lived.
