E-8s hustle the westbound James Whitcomb Riley along the shore on a typical overcast December day in Stonington, CT. almost three years into the takeover of the New Haven by the Penn Central but only eight months into the subsequent takeover of intercity passenger service by Amtrak. The tracks still belong to the Penn Central.The mishmash of equipment was typical in these early Amtrak days
