the end of the Air LineIn 1965, the New Haven Railroad abandoned the Portland-Willimantic (CT) section of the Air Line. Once part of an early inland route between Boston and New Haven via Putnam and Willimantic, it was reduced to a country branchline after the completion of the Shore Line in the early 20th century. I took this photo at the East Hampton station shortly after the scrappers did their work. The station survived and today looks out on a rail trail.
