P&W local at Blackstone

With a puff of smoke, Providence & Worcester B23-7 2201 leads local freight XW-1 out of Worcester through Blackstone, MA, on a fine summer day. Until 1966 this open meadow was the site of a small New Haven RR coach yard and engine layover that accommodated commuter trains from Boston, before service on the Midland was cut back to Franklin by the MBTA.

Photographed by Tom Nelligan, August, 1979.
