Penn Central Show Pony

Railfans with their tripods gathered along side the rails in Shirley this past Wednesday afternoon (2/28) to catch a glimpse of Norfolk Southern's Penn Central Heritage Show Pony. One problem, it never showed. The 28N Autorack train's crew ended their shift in Fitchburg, just east of Wachusett Station.

This ideal location proved to be perfect for photographing this idle train. NS 1073 (SD70ACe) is a tribute to Penn Central, and while this locomotive looks like it's in black paint, it is really in a very dark, dark, green paint. The 1073 looks good, albeit a few good sized areas of chipped paint. We were grateful for being tipped off to this location.

Penn Central's Logo had the nickname of "mating worms" .
