first Night Owl

When Amtrak took over intercity passenger service on May 1, 1971, one casualty was the Federal, the overnight train between Boston and Washington. Exactly one year later Amtrak reversed that decision by inaugurating the Night Owl, the ancestor of today's trains 66/67. A leased PC GP9 headed up the first run of the new train at South Station on the night of April 30, 1972.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

Used to ride the Federal Sunday nights between 1969 and 1971when we were in port at the Submarine Base in New London. Remember the good ride in the heavy P70 coaches brought up form the former PRR, much better than the light weight former NHRR "American Flyer" and newer stainless coaches. The best part of the trip was the "racetrack" south of Providence.

I mourned the passing of the NHRR and should have enjoyed the PC a little more while it was around. Glad Tom has captured this era with his excellent lens work and captions.
