Amtrak Train 137 at Kingston with New Track 3 in the BackgroundAMTK 614 (ACS-64) leads train 137 into Kingston, RI running on track 2. As the rusty rails attest, track 1 was still out of service Wednesday afternoon when I photographed this; it is supposed to return to service soon. Meanwhile the track 3 now sports rails. It will need some ballasting and surfacing and alignment work before it is ready for use (early fall?). It also needs a turnout at the east end, in the middle of Kingston interlocking. At the west end the track 3 is connected to track 1 and there is also 1/2 of a crossover to track 2 at the new Liberty interlocking. I expect that will be completed in June, when bridge work in Shannock, RI takes track 2 out of service for several weeks. The turnout at the east end of track 3 is more of a problem, as it will require single tracking on track 2 from Davisville all the way to High St. in Westerly.
