High Bridge, VA

The bridge was once double tracked. There have been at least three bridges built here since 1852. In 1865 some 80 men of the 4th Massachusetts Cavalry tried to burn the bridge to interrupt Lee's retreat, but were driven off in a wild saber fight. The next day Confederates attempted to burn the bridge in the face of Grant's advance but were in turn driven away. Lee surrendered two days later.
