Kennebec River BridgeHello, this is the start of the Kennebec River Railroad Bridge in Augusta, Maine. For the last few years many people in the know, thinking they know and the real people that should know have been interested in the condition of this Bridge. Since I grew up in this area and had family that use to work for Maine Central, Gilford railways and Pan Am Railways I will give you some fairly recent history about this bridge. This bridge saw use right up to the closing of the old paper mill "Tree Free Fiber" across the River in 2000-01. As you can see this bridge along with most of the "lower road" from Brunswick to Waterville use to be double tracked. Most of this line is single track from the West side of Augusta down to the "Rockland Branch" in Brunswick. So "if" this bridge was fixed up and the rails in Downtown Augusta were uncovered from gravel..A train could travel from Brunswick, connect to the "Lower Road" and travel through Gardiner, Hallowell, Augusta, Waterville and points North I.E Bangor. I rode a passenger train on this line to just up to the Memorial Bridge back in 2008 and the Amtrak Downeaster current stops and boards passengers about 1500Ft from the start of this line in Downtown Brunswick, Maine.
