Holy Cow, what a day!
Went shopping at WalMart with mom. Price checked camcorders. Then to Best Buy, and bought a camcorder just for railfanning. Nothing special or fancy, but an improvement over my Flip Mino.
Then we grabbed lunch at Michael's Diner. Great Burgers.. As we were on our way out from the diner, I caught Q417 calling the CP90 restricting aspect on the scanner. First car against the locomotives? A Conrail side dump car!
So, we shot over to the south end of yard, and Q417 just crept up to Flatbush Avenue and stopped. Conductor dismounted and then proceeded to break the train and set out first four cars (including the Conrail side dump) and the fourth locomotive #2577 [GP38-2] for yard use. After the conductor tied down the handbrakes from the ground with a nifty expanding pole (never saw that before).
A little angle cock issue on the train brake line on the nose of #2577 made things even more leisurely paced and the engineer had to dismount and lend a hand, and to start up #2577.
With the train brake line finally fixed, Q417's locos began pulling up to the yard turnout to back down on the remaining cars, when K531 came blasting through. Another first for me: a unit hopper train. (See next album)
The wind chill was murderous... But I'm happy! Mom seems to bring me good luck during unplanned last minute railfanning. :o)
