Along the Route of the Southern New England

Raised roadway at Cliff and Clark, Globe Village, Southbridge. What's the roadway doing so high above the homes alongside it? This part of Cliff Street was raised 1912-1914 to accommodate a bridge over the right of way below, but the rails never arrived. Guess the bridge is still under there. Thanks to Larry Lowenthal's book "Titanic Railroad" and its many detailed maps.
