Resting GM&O Engine 270 at Laurel, Ms. shop

This engine was formerly used on the GM&O Gulf Coast Rebel during its travel from Mobile, Alabama to St. Louis. When the Rebel service was discontinued, it frequently travel the route from Mobile to Laurel. While in High School, I was a member of an student exchange group that went to Wausau, Wisconsin , traveling on the Rebel from Waynesboro, Ms. to St. Louis with this engine as its power, there and return. From St. Louis to Chicago and return, we traveled on the GM&O Abraham Lincoln. That was the good old days of traditional passenger train travel.

Photographed by Charles B. Gillespie, M.D., 1955.
Added to the photo archive by Charles Gillespie, February 13, 2012.
Railroad: Gulf, Mobile and Ohio.
