CANADIAN PACIFIC 4-4-0 SWITCHING COAL MINE

Canadian Pacific A2q 4-4-0 144 built in 1886 backing down to a loaded coal hopper car for the mixed train to Chipman, New Brunswick. It may be hard to believe that a branch that mainly hauled coal was powered through the 1950's by 4-4-0 locomotives due to bridge restrictions -- not what you would expect on a railroad that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific. John Meyers, the engineer, told me that 144's boiler was bad at this late date and therefore all 144 could haul along with the mixed's combine was eight empty hoppers or four loads from the three or four coal mines still active.
