Diamonds Are Forever

Amtrak P42-9DC #99 leads "Carolinian" #80 across the diamonds at CP Boylan in Raleigh, NC as it slows for its station stop.

The interlocking, on the west side of downtown Raleigh, is where the CSX, former Seaboard main line; the NS, former Southern Greensboro-Goldsboro line; and the NS, former Norfolk Southern Railroad cross.

The crossing was the site of the former Raleigh Tower, which controlled this busy junction for many years. Road crews still refer to the interlocking by that name.

From here to Cary, about eight miles west, CSX and NS share a paired track line. The two roads split again just east of the Cary depot, with the NS line heading northwest toward Durham and the CSX line southwest toward Hamlet.

The Charlotte-New York "Carolinian" is one of four Amtrak trains serving the North Carolina capital, along with two Raleigh-Charlotte "Piedmont" runs and the New York-Florida "Silver Star".
