McMyler Coal Dumper (out of service)
Port Reading, NJ
22 October 2010

Looking up the incline ramp.

By the way,for those of you unfamiliar with McMyler's; a locomotive didn't push the hoppers up this ramp, but in fact a pusher arm (a/k/a "Barney" or "Mule") which was on a pair of narrow gauge tracks located in a channel between the standard gauge tracks (for the hoppers). This channel can be seen in the this photo.

A pusher arm on the Barney would rise up out of the channel, and push on the coupler of the hopper, which in turn pushed the hopper up the ramp to the cradle. (Think of an automatic car wash, where the roller comes up from under the tire track and pushes upon your car tire and thereby propelling your car through the car wash).

Oh, and by the way; it was steam powered!
