Ghost Railroad: Erie Railroad at Montclair, NJIn the 1870's, the Erie Railroad began grading a new line from Montclair to Verona, NJ. The new line would have tunneled underneath the Watchung Ridge to reach Verona directly, instead of the old route which ran north to Great Notch (to ascend the ridge) and then turned 180 degrees and ran south to Verona. Construction began, but soon halted and the line was never completed. This view shows a portion of the grading that was performed (note the berm on the left side of the shot). The location is 95 Central Ave in Montclair, NJ and the view is facing east. The shot was taken on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
