Long Train Runnin'...

With apologies to the Doobie Brothers for borrowing their song title, here is a Southern Railway freight approaching the Alexandria, Va. Amtrak depot on its way out of Potomac Yard.

One of the railway's distinctive high-nosed GP30s leads the long train on its way south. Potomac Yard was the long-time interchange and classification yard for all the railroads serving the Washington, D.C. area.

The area to the right of the railroad right-of-way is today occupied by the King Street Station of Washington Metro, used by Metro Blue Line and Yellow Line trains.

Photographed by Thomas McCann, 1975.

Railroad: Southern.
