Taking A Powder...

Chicago & North Western dome lounge "Powder River" was a part of Union Pacific's "Pacific Limited" steam trip to the Pacific Northwest in September 1995, not long after the C&NW-UP merger.

The car, originally built as Milwaukee Road "Super Dome" #53, is shown in the "Pacific Limited" consist at Portland, Ore. Union Station, after arriving in the Rose City behind UP 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" #3985 and the railroad's three E9 diesels.

UP subsequently sold the car to North Carolina DOT, which named the car "Mount Mitchell" and used it in "Piedmont" service between Raleigh and Charlotte.

The dome returned to the Midwest in 2005 when North Star Rail acquired it for use in its excursion fleet with former MILW 4-8-4 #261.
