Disco Time...New Jersey Transit E8 #4323 wears the transit agency's "disco" color scheme as it awaits rehabilitation at the Rome Locomotive Works in Rome, N.Y.
The 4243, originally built as New York Central #4076, was at RLW to be refurbished for the United Railroad Historical Society in New Jersey. It emerged from the shop in Erie passenger colors, numbered #834.
NJDOT had originally acquired the unit from Conrail in December 1976. It was rebuilt in March 1980 and was the second of three E8s rebuilt at Conrail's Elizabethport, N.J. shop.
It served until 1982 when it was retired from passenger service. It was modified in 1983 for use in Dover during the Morris & Essex re-electrification project and was stored soon thereafter.
Since it was equipped with a generator set for heating and air conditioning coaches in place of one of its prime mover diesel engines, it has half the horsepower of the agency's other E8 locomotives.
The unit was painted in the Erie RR color scheme in November 1990 through funds from URHS and the Jersey Central Railway Historical Society. In 2008 URHS restored it again in its original colors as NYC No. 4076.
