Southern Steam Star

When the Southern Railway began its famed steam excursion program in the late 1960s, this locomotive was its first star.

Mikado #4501 had come back to the Southern after a stint on the Kentucky & Tennessee shortline in Stearns, Ky.

The 2-8-2 is at the Alexandria, Va. station on the return leg of an excursion to Front Royal, Va. on the Southern's branch from Manassas.

The 4501 is now owned by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga and was restored to service in 2014.

Photographed by Thomas McCann, 1975.
Added to the photo archive by Thomas McCann, June 10, 2010.
